Dr. Letourneau provides specialized care for patients with complex vision conditions throughout Kansas City, Topeka, and surrounding areas. A large portion of patients seen in our clinic have keratoconus and irregular corneas, making these conditions a primary focus of our practice.
Dr. Letourneau specializes in custom contact lenses for keratoconus, including scleral lenses and other advanced specialty lens designs that can significantly improve vision and comfort when glasses or traditional contacts are no longer effective.
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive corneal condition in which the normally round cornea becomes weakened and gradually bulges into a cone-like shape. As the cornea changes shape, it often becomes thinner and develops increasing irregular astigmatism, making vision blurry and distorted. Because of these changes, many patients find that glasses and traditional soft contact lenses no longer provide clear vision, especially as the condition advances.
Early keratoconus can be difficult to detect without advanced corneal imaging and diagnostic technology. In the earliest stages, patients may still achieve good vision with glasses or soft contact lenses. However, as keratoconus progresses, many patients benefit from specialty contact lenses such as scleral lenses, which are designed to provide clearer, more stable vision for individuals with keratoconus and irregular corneas.
Keratoconus typically affects both eyes, although one eye is often significantly worse than the other. Many patients first notice vision changes when their stronger eye becomes affected, even though the condition may have been progressing in the other eye for years.
How Keratoconus Changes Over Time
Keratoconus often begins to develop in the earlier stages of life, frequently appearing during the teen years or young adulthood. Because the condition is progressive, the cornea can gradually change shape over time, which may cause vision to become increasingly distorted or difficult to correct with standard glasses or soft contact lenses. For many people the progression slows later in adulthood, though the pace and severity of change can vary widely from one person to another.
Since every case of keratoconus progresses differently, early diagnosis and ongoing monitoring are essential. Using advanced corneal imaging and diagnostic technology, Dr. Letourneau can detect subtle changes in the cornea and guide patients toward the most effective treatment options, including custom specialty contact lenses and scleral lenses designed to provide clearer, more stable vision.
How Specialty Contact Lenses Help
One of the most effective options for many patients is a scleral contact lens, a specialized lens designed to vault over the irregular cornea and rest on the white part of the eye. This design creates a smooth optical surface that can significantly improve vision for individuals with keratoconus and irregular corneas
.
Because scleral lenses avoid direct contact with the cornea, they are often very comfortable to wear while providing stable, high-quality vision. At the Contact Lens Institute of Kansas, advanced corneal imaging and diagnostic technology is used to map the surface of the eye and gather detailed measurements. This allows Dr. Letourneau to design custom scleral lenses and other specialty contact lenses, including Gas Permeable lenses and custom soft lenses, helping patients in throughout Kansas City, Topeka, and surrounding Kansas and Missouri communities achieve clearer vision and improved comfort.

Is keratoconus the same as astigmatism?
No. Keratoconus often causes irregular astigmatism, but they are not the same condition. Regular astigmatism is usually caused by a cornea that is evenly curved in one direction, while keratoconus causes the cornea to thin and bulge into an irregular cone-like shape, making vision harder to correct with standard glasses.
Can keratoconus make night driving difficult?
Yes. Keratoconus can cause glare, halos, starbursts, and distorted vision, which may become more noticeable at night. Many people find night driving harder because streetlights, headlights, and low-light conditions can make visual distortion more distracting.
Can rubbing your eyes make keratoconus worse?
Yes. Frequent or aggressive eye rubbing may contribute to worsening corneal thinning and distortion in people with keratoconus. Patients are often advised to avoid rubbing their eyes and to manage allergies or irritation that may trigger the habit.
